As we are approaching the return to soccer on 6/22 Torpedoes SC wanted to acknowledge the winners of our "What I miss about soccer" competition.

When the pandemic first hit and soccer was cancelled, Torpedoes SC asked our players to write an essay on what they missed most about soccer. We received numerous entries and decided to break it into 2 categories U7-U10 & U11 & older.

We would like to congratulate U7-U10 winner Jacob Needleman from the 10B Black team. Then Nico Canone for the U12B White team as the winner of the U11 and older age group.

Both letters written by the boys are below:

Jacob Needleman:

It is the smell of the turf when you first walk onto the field. It is the noise coming from the sidelines. It is the way my heart beats fast when I score a goal. It is the way the trainers challenge me to get to the next level. It is the feeling of sweat on my face after I have worked extra hard. It is the hand of a teammate helping me up after I have just been slide tackled. It is playing in rain, sleet or blazing heat. It is the thrill of a weekend tournament. It is the slaps of high fives from my teammates. It is all these things and so much more. These are the things that I miss most about soccer.

Soccer is the biggest passion in my life. Coming to the field feels like coming home. Soccer is a place where I can see how things come together. Step by step, I constantly work on my game. I take the trainers advice at practice and then work hard at home. I can see my efforts help me change and grow. As Pele says, “success is no accident”. There is nothing to compare to getting my touches on the ball and growing as a player. To put it simply, soccer helps me be me.

Since I have been at home, I feel like something is missing. Soccer is in my blood. I cannot wait to practice with my trainers, see my teammates again, and play with all I have got. Running, sweating, and working hard. That is what it is all about for me and I cannot wait to feel like me again. The field is waiting!

Nico Canone:

Dear Soccer,

While I am working hard everyday
In the house is where I have to stay

I keep practicing with my ball
All alone without you all

I kick and practice my hard shot
Working hard is all I got

All alone just me and my ball
kicking, shooting, missing it all

I practice in silence, no whistles are blowing
No teammates, no handshakes, no lights glowing

Times goes by and I count the days
I miss so many things in so many ways

I miss my team, practice and the game
Staying in the house is nothing but lame

What I miss the most is all the hype
Feeling my heart race before I strike

My cleats are ready and by the door
First thing back I am going to score!
